Our heroes are dead. All hope seems lost, yet the saga continues.
Jujutsu Kaisen season three is coming. With season two came the death, destruction, and utter disaster that was the Shibuya Incident, leaving everyone on a massive cliffhanger. The teaser of the upcoming season came on the tail end of season two credits.
The new season will feature something manga fans are all too familiar with, i.e., the Culling Games arc. What exactly does that entail? Better yet, when can fans — still recuperating from all the loss and despair of the last season — expect the new season to put them out of their misery?
What We Know So Far
Jujutsu Kaisen season two aired from July to December 2023. At the end moment, as the Shibuya Incident arc wrapped up, a teaser offered a sneak peek into what one may expect from the upcoming season.
From the teaser, it is easy to assume what season three will focus on, i.e., the Culling Games arc. The Jujutsu Kaisen manga chapters 159 to 221 covered this arc that deals with the chaos that followed the Shibuya Incident. It focuses on the tale of Yuta Okkotsu, a swordsman who first appeared in the movie Jujutsu Kaisen O.
Before delving into the Culling Games, though, the season must cover a few smaller story arcs, like the Itadori’s Extermination chapters. It will focus on Yuji’s near-execution before delving into the Perfect Preparation arc, where the sorcerers will band together and prepare to participate in the Jujutsu battle royal, i.e., the Culling Games.
Unfortunately, considering the scope of the season, the wait before its release may last at least two years. The teaser covered little, and there is no release window yet. So, the season’s chances of coming out this year are low. MAPPA is also busy with the Chainsaw Man film, so a late 2025 or 2026 release may be fans’ best bet.
Season two covered about 70 chapters, while three should aim for over 80. This increase means some scenes may not make the cut, provided MAPPA follows the standard 23-24 episode per season rule. The cast should stay the same, but there will be massive changes after Shibuya.
Crowd-favorite Gojo sensei is still in the prison realm, so viewers may not see much of him. However, he may not be the only one missing. Many fans are in denial about Kento Nanami’s end. But while his absence left a gaping wound in everyone’s hearts, one will still need to come to terms with it this season. Other than that, Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, Nobara Kugisaki, Yuta Okkotsu, Maki Zen’in, Tofe Inumaki, Panda, Kiyotaka Ijichi, and Shoko Ieiri should make an appearance this season.
The Tale So Far
Season two of Jujutsu Kaisen adapted two major manga arcs — the Premature Death/Hidden Inventory and the Shibuya Incident. The season began with antagonists Mahito and Geto/Kenjaku attempting to seal Gojo and his powers away.
It all came to a head in Shibuya, with Yuji, Megumi, and other sorcerers teaming up to defeat the villains. But the victory came had its costs, and the fandom lost its collective husband when Mahito murdered Nanami sensei. Nobara, too, is nowhere to be found, and chances are, she is dead too.
Toward the tail end of the arc, Geto awakened Tsumiki Fushiguro and several other non-sorcerers with latent abilities or cursed objects in their system. The reason? To have sorcerers and non-sorcerers fight each other to the death. The Jujutsu Society blames Gojo sensei for the Shibuya disaster and exiles him. They also sentence Yuji to death, with Yuta as his executioner.
The state of the faculty and students at Tokyo Jujutsu High is also not great, as the Jujutsu Society currently holds both Principal Yaga and Gojo Sensei accountable for the Shibuya Incident as Geto.
The following season should pick up from precisely this point and follow the students as they deal with Yuji’s execution and try to absolve him of his supposed crimes. Aside from the actual murderous games, creators will hopefully spend at least a few episodes on their preparation arc. After all, what is a shonen without its dramatic moments, long training sequences, self-reflexive bouts, followed by emotional revelations, and massive power level-ups?
That said, there is still a long wait before fans witness any unfold. Thankfully, this is the perfect time to catch up on old content, including the manga and the movie. The movie focused a great deal on Yuta and his powers, and since the coming season should center around Yuta’s tale and prowess, it is something fans must watch before moving forward.
